Want to encourage your team to recycle more in the workplace, but not sure on where to start? You’ve come to the right place! Here are some easy and effective tips to help your team become recycling gurus:

1. Educate your staff

Educating your staff on what common office items can be recycled and how will take away a major barrier to workplace recycling. A recent article by Cleanaway Waste Management sited that over 90% of Australians wish to recycle, but only 10% get it right. Educating your staff through meetings, memos and signage around the office will ensure your team gets it right.

2. Reward your staff

As with all conscious positive changes to team behaviour, positive reinforcement can go a long way. Has your team been working hard to support each other in recycling correctly? Why not reward them with a coffee machine for the kitchen or a weekly fruit basket? Recognition and gratitude help reinforce positive behaviour and motivates your team to keep up the good work.

3. Equip your office for easy recycling

The best way to ensure your team is recycling everything they can, is to make it as easy for them as possible. Equip your office with anything they may need to get it right, such as divided bins with clear signage about what goes where (in accessible and centralised locations), signage in your kitchen to remind staff of what items can and cannot be recycled, and best of all – professional office cleaners who ensure follow through with recycling processes.

4. Engage office cleaning professionals

Following on from the above point: If your team is making a conscious effort to recycle correctly, only for your separated waste to be dumped into the same communal bin headed straight for landfill… their efforts – and yours – are being wasted.  Investing in knowledgeable and experienced office cleaning professionals is an easy and efficient way of ensuring your team’s recycling efforts are followed through. Quality professional cleaners will also be able to give industry advice on best practice recycling procedures.

5. Upgrade your office equipment and supplies

Ask your office cleaning company to help carry out an assessment of your workplace, and identify which equipment, systems, and supplies can be upgraded or changed to a more eco-friendly alternative. Some easy switches might include switching to recycled printing paper, biodegradable coffee machine pods, asking your cleaners to switch to “green” products where possible, or switching your light globes to more energy efficient and recyclable alternatives. You don’t have to implement everything at once but start small today and work your way towards a better future for all.
