General Cleaning: Walls

Wall cleaning is an easy way to improve the look of your property but it is very important that you are gentle and do not rush the job.

Things you will Need:

Cleaning Solution:

Contrary to popular belief you should not immediately jump on sugar soap products for wall cleaning [we will explain why below]. Most generic household cleaners like Spray and Wipe or soapy water will be fine for the sort of cleaning most people will be undertaking. Always perform a patch test before cleaning no matter what product you are using.

Miscellaneous rags, cloths and sponges:

You don’t need anything fancy for wall cleaning, sponges will prove sufficient. Avoid rough surfaced sponges or pads [scouring pads are to be avoided] as they are prone to damaging paint. Some people find using microfiber mops to access higher areas useful, but it comes down to preference in these cases.

Things to Keep in Mind:

Walls, of all the surfaces in the home, are the most prone to damage. Whether due to aging and degradation of the paint or simply due to over-enthusiastic cleaning attempts, walls can be scratched and chipped easily leading to costly repainting bills.

Before undertaking any cleaning it is important to do a ‘patch test’ to make sure your cleaning product is suitable. Find an inconspicuous patch of paint, apply the product lightly and gently wipe it away. If it causes any damage or for the paint to thin any discontinue use immediately.

It is also important that you are diligent when cleaning walls: any cracks or peeling has to be treated extremely carefully. Often if peeling paint is cleaned too vigorously it can loosen further and start to come off in clumps, leading to entire walls being left patchy.

It is also worth keeping an eye out for mould, as it often grows in bubbles underneath the paint, causing issues when the paint is cleaned. If a wall has a mould buildup that has gotten under the paint often the only way to remove it is by painting over it.

When it comes to using sugar soap beware: whilst it does help clean walls it can also leave it with a fine buildup. This is not an issue if the walls will be painted immediately [in fact it aids the process] but in domestic use it often leads to walls looking subpar and tends to require further cleaning to remove.

Cleaning the Walls:

When cleaning walls basic procedures are followed as you would with most surfaces but with more care taken to be gentle: apply the cleaning solution, allow to sit and gently work away with a regular sponge. Whether a full wall washdown or major mark removal the basic procedure is the same, just be careful not to accidentally remove paint.

With walls that are dirtier often major mark removal can lead to inconsistencies in the condition and appearance of the walls. In these cases it is necessary to clean the entire wall to even it out. Keep in mind this can be a large job before undertaking the cleaning.

How Often Should it be Done?

It depends on how prone your walls are to getting dirty, and also on the quality and type of paint used on the walls. Since walls are not particularly prone to getting dirty and the job can be considered one of the more difficult ones it may only be necessary annually for practicality reasons.

General Cleaning: Tiled Area

Cleaning the tiles, usually located on or around the bathtub or shower or on the walls, periodically is important as they are very prone to soap scum and mould, both of which degrade the quality of the air and can lead to unpleasant odours. The grout [the sealant between the tiles] can be prone to mould infections as well, causing it to discolour.

Things you will Need:

Cleaning Solution:

Washing your tiles with water alone is not worth the time or effort. Even a basic tile cleaning solution will offer benefits in terms of loosening up dirt and leaving a nice shine. Supermarkets offer a wide range of brands, many of the popular brands are more than enough.

Scrubber:

Washing your tiles without a scrubber is not worth the time or effort. You will require a scouring pad or steel wool to remove the hardest soap cum and water marks from the tiles ; also to clean the grout thoroughly. Supermarkets offer a wide range of brands, many of the popular brands are more than enough.

Cleaning the Tiles:

Spray your cleaning solution onto the tiled areas and leave for the advise period of time. If your grout is showing signs of discolouration you may want to use a little more on them.

Using a scrubber, start to scrub and wipe away the cleaning solution. If the area is resistant you can apply more pressure or more solution and leave to sit again. For particularly stubborn areas or discoloured grouting you can use a scouring pad or steel wool to remove the mould, but be careful as this can lead to damaging your tiles.

How Often Should it be Done?

We would recommend doing the tile cleaning at least once a week as it helps keep the job as manageable as possible.

You can be sure that when the Keen To Clean staff visits your home, you will get 100% satisfaction from our tile cleaning service in all Melbourne, Sydney and Adelaide suburbs. To book a cleaning day, please feel free to drop us a line at 1300-737978, 0425-758379 for 24/7 emergency cleaning, or email us at enquiry@keentoclean.com.au.

General Cleaning: Windows

Cleaning windows is an important part of maintaining the visual appeal of your property. It is a relatively simple job, with all the necessary elements able to be purchased at your local supermarket and often at fairly cheap prices.

Things you will Need:

Cleaning Solution:

Washing your windows with water alone is not worth the time or effort. Even a basic window cleaning solution will offer benefits in terms of loosening up dirt and leaving a nice shine. Supermarkets offer a wide range of brands, many of the popular brands are more than enough.

Squeegee:

The tool that will do the actual work. A lot of people get squeegees that are too large, aiming to get them as wide as their windows so they can get them done in one stroke. Don’t be fooled, this will make the job harder as you will find it a lot harder to get into small areas and along the rims. We usually advise that a foot wide edge is flexible enough to allow for use on most domestic windows of mirrors.

Miscellaneous rags, cloths and sponges: With any cleaning job you will need the basics. These can be purchased at all supermarkets, but you don’t necessarily need new ones for each job. Just make sure they are thoroughly cleaned first.

Cleaning the Windows:

Start by making sure that you remove all excess dust and spider webs with a rag. It doesn’t need to be too thorough, just do a wipe over of the window with an old rag or a sponge to get it loose. Make sure you don’t use a scouring pad or something too strong or you risk scratching paint off or the glass.

Spray your cleaning solution on and allow to sit for a short time so that the chemicals can loosen up the dirt and sink in. That said, don’t go too far away as if the solution dries you will have to reapply it so that the squeegee can smoothly swipe.

In terms of using the squeegee so long as you are thorough and remember to overlap, you will get a degree of result. We recommend a horizontal zigzag pattern where you go across and then back in the opposite direction [making sure to overlap a little] repeatedly starting from the top of the window and moving down. This helps reduce streaking and means you don’t need to dry your squeegee as often, whilst using gravity to your advantage.

To finish off, use a dry rag to dry off the window sills and frames, wiping any excess dirt off in the process.

How Often Should it be Done?

We would recommend doing the windows at least once a month as it helps keep the job as manageable as possible.

You can be sure that when the Keen To Clean staff visits your home, you will get 100% satisfaction from our window cleaning service in all Melbourne, Sydney and Adelaide suburbs.
In one of the Keen to Clean Groups most auspicious nights in its history the group last night received the Runners Up award for the 2011 FCA Excellence in Franchising Awards International Franchising.

Brij from Keen to Clean, 2011 Westpac FCA Excellence in Franchising Awards

Also nominated for the Emerging Franchisor 2011 Award, the Group came ahead of 100s of competing entries to demonstrate that its franchise model, used as the basis of its international Indian market expansion that ultimately achieved the result, is truly world class.

The award follows becoming ISO certified earlier this year in proving the Keen to Clean Group is a group that runs at industry defining levels.

The Franchise Council of Australia Limited (FCA) is the peak body for the $128 billion franchise sector in Australia, representing franchisees, franchisors and service providers to the sector. The FCA Excellence in Franchising Awards recognises and rewards the excellence of companies and individuals in the franchise sector. The categories, criteria and judging have all been developed independently of the FCA.

Thank You Speech from Brij, 2011 Westpac FCA Excellence in Franchising Awards

Keen to Clean took its successful Australian operations model and used that as the basis of its Indian international system. The integrity and attention to detail put the Keen to Clean Group above its competing entries. Its success in Australia also earned it a finalist position in the Emerging Franchisor category, demonstrating a high degree of franchise refinement and success.

Tips for Spring Clean

Outdoor Cleaning

It was a wet and miserable winter and the thought of ever cleaning outside of the reach of your heater did not appeal. Winter was the perfect time for cleaning out the indoors, but now that the weather is nicer it is time to give your outdoors a little TLC. Although it may have been a wet old winter, that doesn’t mean the house is clean. Many areas will need a clean over, and its best to get it now before the summer months roll in and make the works unbearable in the heat.

Some area that you may want to focus on:

- Windows from the outside. Chances are they will be webbed up or caked with dirt, so get them looking clean and the whole house will be brightened.

- The pavements and concrete around your property. Often the pavements can get mouldy or dirty over winter, so take the chance to give them a good scrub down or get us in for a pressure clean.

- Pruning back the garden. If it’s a jungle out there you ought to use the chance to get it under control. It will help keep insect levels down as well.

BBQ Cleaning

Although BBQs are often thought of as a summer thing, we say celebrate the improvement in weather as quickly as possible and crack out your barby in the spring!

But if you’re like most people, your bbq has had an entire winter to build up a particularly unappetising level of dirt and congealed grease. It isn’t a fun job, but it can be done with a little perseverance.

We recommend using a strong grease cutting product or specialist cleaner from the supermarket and a good degree of elbow grease. Also, make this the year you regularly clean it instead of waiting till the last minute like we always do every year before.

Mattress Airing

Getting your mattress steam cleaned is the best way of getting it really clean. But there are ways you can help that don’t involve a deep clean. Vacuuming, of course, is the easiest. Occasionally a once over with fabric odour remover that you can pick up at most supermarkets helps too. The final is airing out your mattress.

It is a simple practice but the nicer weather gives you the perfect opportunity in order to get your mattress some sun. It helps remove odours, kill build-ups of mould that might otherwise spread and helps to give the springs a workout as well. A few hours on a nice day will help give your bed a breath of fresh air.
